It is not an exaggeration to say that the world, as we know it today, runs on databases. They are all around us – in fact, you are sort of looking at one right now. Databases, especially large ones, are fairly useless though without a database management system keeping track of its input and output. Since most databases store information in the form of tables, or relations, we speak of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS).
